Isn't it Awesome

The science Nobel Prizes were a particular interest to me this year, partly because they were all crucial to biology and medicine, and partly because several women were awarded. These amazing women inspire me and are huge role models, so I thought I'd take a minute to show them some respect.

Ada E. Yonath, along with her two research partners, won the chemistry prize "for studies of the structure and function of the ribosome." Ada, born in 1939, is from Israel, and worked at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.

In Medicine/Physiology, two-thirds of the research team were women. Carol Greider, born in 1961, worked at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, which is one of, if not the, most prestigious medical schools in the world. Elizabeth Blackburn (which I find particularly cool, because the first licensed female doctor in the U.S. was named Elizabeth Blackwell.), born in Australia in 1948, worked primarily at the University of California San Francisco. Together, these two women, along with their partner Jack Szostak, won the award for their groundbreaking work in discovering "how chromosomes are protected by telomeres and the enzyme telomerase."

Congratulations to these amazing women and their vital discoveries! More can be found out about them and the other winners here: http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/lists/2009.html

Also, I hope everyone has been wearing pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Even if you're not a pink girl normally, try to get in some cute pink accessories before the month is over to show your backing of the cause.

Love,

Miss Argon
